Safety Recommendations

Effective April 2026Version 1.0

Accrewal connects sailors, clubs, and crew. While we verify sailing experience and club affiliations, we do not verify personal identity. Please take sensible precautions when meeting people you have connected with through the platform.

Meet in a public place first

For any first meeting, choose a busy, public location such as a club house, marina, or sailing event. Avoid meeting at private addresses until you know the person well.

Tell someone your plans

Let a trusted friend or family member know where you are going, who you are meeting, and when you expect to be back. Check in with them afterwards.

Share your live location

Turn on live location sharing with a trusted contact before you go, and keep your phone charged. Services such as WhatsApp, Find My, and Google Maps all support this.

We don't verify identity

Accrewal verifies sailing hours and club affiliations — not personal identity or qualifications. It is your responsibility to satisfy yourself that someone is who they say they are before meeting in person or crewing with them.

Video call before meeting

A short video call is an easy way to verify someone's identity and get a feel for them before meeting in person. Most people will be happy to do this.

Trust your instincts

If something feels wrong, it probably is. You are never obligated to proceed with any meeting or voyage — it is always acceptable to withdraw at any point, for any reason.

Emergency contacts

If you are ever in danger or uncertain about your safety, contact the relevant service immediately:

  • Emergency services — 999 (coastguard, police, ambulance)
  • HM Coastguard (non-emergency) — 020 3817 2000
  • RNLI — 0300 456 0000
